Pentalandia

In the permanent collection of The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Mn.
This work was created as an extended performance piece.
I created and destroyed the city over an imaginary history
including its own chronology and cast of characters.
It is recorded as text photos and maps in note books which I still have.

tiny wax buildings ships, bridges and all the stuff of a great city.

 

The Land of Counterpane

“The Land of Counterpane”
30' x 8' x 3' stone, ceramic, water 2004.
Installed in the main lobby of The McKnight Foundation, Minneapolis Mn.
This fountain is comprised of 30 24" tall glazed ceramic towers.
Set in a contained fountain, it includes an elaborate indoor garden.

Babylon: Garden of Eden

“Babylon as The Garden of Eden”
20' x 8' x 3' oil clay, encaustic, ceramic begun December 2003
This is the opening night for this ongoing project it has since lived through a 9000 year history.

 

“Babylon in The Sumerian Era”
20' x 8' x 3' oil clay, encaustic, ceramic begun December 2004
The piece was populated with more than 1000 tiny ceramic buildings
including the Tower of Babel and The Temple of Marduk seen in the foreground.

Photo taken before sunrise on September 11, 2004
After sunrise, I dressed as Marduk and threw stones at the piece destroying the
Sumerian Civilization. That's what the piece is all about creation, destruction,
war, peace and HISTORY.
